How to Finish the Back of an Embroidery Hoop for Gifting
Share
Who this tutorial is for
This tutorial is for stitchers who want their embroidery to look finished and gift-ready, even if the back stitching is a little messy. If you have ever wondered how other people make their hoops look so neat from behind, this guide is for you.
You do not need special tools or perfect stitches. You just need a clean, simple finish.
Why finishing the back of your hoop matters
A finished back:
- Protects your stitches
- Keeps fabric from loosening
- Makes the piece look intentional
- Instantly upgrades it for gifting
Even small projects feel more polished with this step.
The popular "felt backing" method
This is the most beginner-friendly and forgiving option.
What you need
- Felt (wool or craft felt both work)
- Cardstock
- Needle and thread
- Scissors
- Quilt batting
How to do it
- Remove the hoop and trim excess fabric, leaving about 1 inch
- Run a loose gathering stitch around the fabric edge
- Pull gently to tighten and secure
- Cut felt to match the inner hoop size
- Stitch or carefully glue the felt in place
This hides the stitching and keeps everything secure.
My preferred method
Cardstock with Quilt Batting
What you need
- Cardstock or cardboard
- Needle and thread
- Scissors or circle template cutter
- Quilt batting
How to do it
- Remove the hoop and trim excess fabric, leaving about 1 inch
- Whipstitch around the fabric edge
- Trim excess fabric
- Fill the hoop with quilt batting
- Glue a cardstock/cardboard circle to the back of the hoop
This hides the stitching, keeps everything secure, and lets you sign and date your hoop.
Common finishing mistakes
- Cutting fabric too close to the hoop
- Pulling the gather stitch too tight
- Using hot glue too close to the edge
- Forgetting to retighten the hoop
Slow and neat beats fast and messy here.
